Brutal Truth
Goodbye Cruel World 2xCD (Relapse Records)

By: Jeb Branin

It was a sad day indeed when I got the word that BRUTAL TRUTH, quite possibly the greatest grind band to ever exist, had called it quits. The only silver lining in the very dark cloud of this band's demise was the impending release of their double disc "farewell" package called "Goodbye Cruel World". I now have that CD in hand and in spite of it ripping open old wounds (bands this great are supposed to break up until I tell them to) it is as fitting a farewell as one could ever ask of a band. "Goodbye Cruel World" is primarily a live chronicle of BRUTAL TRUTH but there are a few extra surprises as well. Disc one shows the band at their prime shortly before they dropped the curtain (axe?) on their career. It highlights the band's sound as featured on masterpieces like "Kill Trend Suicide" and "Sounds Of The Animal Kingdom". A sound that had evolved far beyond any genre tag as limiting as "grindcore". BRUTAL TRUTH were more thrashing, more hardcore and more noisy than ever before or anyone else. Music of this caliber and intensity can't possibly be described. It can only be experienced. Be sure to look for the hidden track, a truly magical QUEEN cover. Disc two is more of a flashback disc featuring highlights from all stages of BRUTAL TRUTH's storied existence. It features plenty of new songs, old songs, cover tunes, album bonus tunes and 7" tracks. Listening to disc two is like going to an all you can eat buffet that is so good you stuff yourself until you are ready to burst. Except instead of your stomach, it is your head that is ready to explode from an aural gorging of grind. B.T. even pay homage to their horde of internet fans by offering a special bonus track that is only available online. Get this CD now. You can't possibly regret it!
