Angela Davis
The Prison Industrial Complex - Spoken Lecture (Alternative Tentacles)

By: Jeb Branin

Angela Davis is a charming, intelligent, warm, enjoyable and well spoken woman who has also been the target of multiple human rights abuses from the United States government because of her personal and political leanings. Her activism is an inspiration to any who feel the need to exercise their human right of self expression and self determination. This lecture captured on CD is a wonderful primer for anyone interested in the issues surrounding the ongoing war of the United States government against its own citizens, especially those of color or unfortunate enough to be poor. Ms. Davis is not a radical kook calling for a nation to ignore the violent crimes of reprehensible criminals but instead challenges the attitudinal norm of those in power and questions the motivations of a prison system that is moving towards a money producing, free enterprise system intent on warehousing human beings. She challenges society to look at the issues that lead to the incarceration of people in the first place and them demands that the prison system, as a system, be attentive to the rights of those imprisoned. I have taught college courses to men in a state penitentiary and I must say her words ring true and her perspective seems just. These people are not objects to be cataloged and stored. Bravo Ms. Davis.
