Violent Femmes
Freak Magnet (Beyond Music)

By: Alex Steininger

The seminal alternative act (used in its original definition before alternative was alternative), Violent Femmes are back with their first studio album in five years. An explosion of their acoustic pop standards, as well as other driving rock songs, the band rockets its way back into fans hearts with FREAK MAGNET, an album sure to please fans and gain some new ones.

The first single, "Sleepwalkin'," is a bouncy, charged pop ditty sure to find a home on modern rock radio. The drums are crisp, the bass is driving, and the guitars soar through razor sharp modern rock and pop chords. Then there are cuts like "Freak Magnet," the dirty, wild rock 'n' roll number sure to get you remembering when rock 'n' roll was real, as well as the acoustic "All I Want," a folk-y pop cut sure to hook you while mellowing you out.

Of course, with fifteen tracks, the album is plentiful with great tunes. "Mosh Pit" finds the band blasting out punk, while "When You Died" once again brings forth tender acoustic pop. "Hollywood Is High" and "New Generation" are two more stand out cuts on this album that once again finds Violent Femmes in good form. I'll give it a B+.
