Sculptured Apollo Ends (The End Records) By: Jeb Branin
Don Anderson and company are back with an even more adventurous release than "The Spear of the Lily is Aureoled". SCULPTURED has taken the horns that were previously only used for an odd embellishment and incorporated them more fully into the sound. In many instances the trumpet and trombone are even given enough room to breathe that they manage to take control of the song. There are times when this added dimension gives the music an almost mariachi flavor and at other times it sounds like inspiration for the horns was born of Ornette Coleman (especially on "Between Goldberg"). It all works extremely well. The heart and soul of the music is still dark metal with clashing death growls and clean singing. Complex guitars and multiple time changes keep the music (and the listener) on edge throughout and lend a sense of immediacy to the entire project. Track five, "Apollo Destroys, Apollo Creates", is worth special mention. It is one of the most standout tracks and it is also the one furthest removed from the albums norm. It is a two part construct of clashing musical sensibilities. The first part is discordant and noisy. It is pure chaos and represents destruction. The second is melodic, gentle and beautiful. It represents creation. Combined they are the soundtrack of existence.
