Sentenced
Crimson (Century Media)

By: Jeb Branin

At what point should a band consider changing their name as they change their sound? Obviously there is not an answer that can be applied across the board but it is a question definitely begged by the latest offering from Finland's SENTENCED called "Crimson". Spawned in the early 90s as one of death metal's more technical and adventurous bands they have continually evolved and mutated with each release, riding that sense of adventurism for all it is worth over the years until they have now reached a point where they are simply not even in the same broad musical genre as they used to be (ala TIAMAT, for another example). That is not to say that the "new" SENTENCED is not also "improved" because from many a standpoint they certainly are. They have allowed their sound to grow and change in pace with the constantly reshaping musical landscape thus making themselves contemporarily accessible and forward looking. "Crimson" is a flat out catchy and memorable hard rock album with multiple hooks that could be called "pop" and an overall vibe that is not too dissimilar to neo Metallica. Indeed this is a CD that will probably turn a lot of heads and deserves to make it onto many a "Best of the Year" list... I just doubt that very many of those impressed will be fans from the early years of SENTENCED's career.
