Rotten Sound
Drain (Repulse Records)

By: Jeb Branin

Although they have continued to evolve from the chaotic grinding mayhem of their masterful "Psychotic Veterinarians" ep, ROTTEN SOUND are no less powerful than in the past. Furthering the development evidenced on their "Under Pressure" CD the band have really carved a deep grindcore trench using their low end for the excavation. Everything is much more controlled and deliberate on "Drain" with a branching out of style plainly evident. They vary the pace and the delivery quite a bit from track to track but that absolutely pulsating low end keeps it all tied together. I can't help but be reminded of DISMEMBER who have the most potent low end in death metal. Maybe ROTTEN SOUND will be the DISMEMBER of grindcore. They could do worse! In fact now that I write that it occurs to me that ROTTEN SOUND could vary easily be described as a mix of later era DISMEMBER and later era EXTREME NOISE TERROR.
