Grey Area
Fanbelt Algebra (Victory Records)

By: Jeb Branin

Although various members of this band have impressive rTsumTs in the hardcore scene, GREY AREA continues to be a project that moves them very much in a different direction. Call it "melodic hardcore" or "pop punk" or "hardcore lite" or whatever you want but definitely be sure to call it "amazing" because that is exactly what it is. The first Grey Area CD was solid in its own right but in no way hinted as to how superb this follow up was going to be. The fact that GREY AREA is not only able to build on traditional pop hooks but incorporate melodic interpretations of NYHC is one of the things that really contributes to, not only the strength of "Fanbelt Algebra", but the uniqueness of the CD as well. This album is one of the few of its type I have heard in years and years that honestly brings to mind the vibe and presence of THE DESCENDANTS in their heyday. Buy this. Buy this. Buy this.
