Digging It Up (Grub Records)

By: Jeb Branin

"Digging It Up" is the latest installment in the Grub Records catalog of compilations featuring homegrown ska, punk and hardcore bands from around the world. If you have had the good fortune to pick up any of these ridiculously low priced comps you know how diverse yet how solid they are. If you haven't done yourself the favor in the past you may want to consider jumping on board now because "Digging It Up" is the best in the series by a longshot. As Grub Records has extended its influence it has been able to connect to more and more high quality bands from all over the U.S. and as far away as Sweden and Belarus. Especially noteworthy is how much better the Ska bands are this time around. I am not much of a ska fan but there are plenty of bands on here that grab my attention including T.I.P., COUSIN OLIVER, DIRT BIKE ANNIE, NIPON and the best of the bunch LUBBY NUGGET. On the punk part of the disc (which is all pop punk) standouts include THE IGUANAS, SLUTMAGNET, DOUBLE STANDARD and HUMBLE BEGINNINGS. The hardcore portion also has some real stellar acts including CHURL, SUPERHIGHWAY CARFIRE, DROPNICKEL and CALM.
