Admiral Twin
Mock Heroic (Mojo Records)

By: Alex Steininger

Have you ever wondered what would happen if a hippie jam-rock band were capable of crafting sharp, crisp pop hooks? Or if a pop band were able to get the grooves that those dreaded hippie jam bands always drag you in with, without you realizing it, of course. Well, Admiral Twin will answer both questions with Mock Heroic, an album that is equal parts jam rock and pop rock.

Led by an acoustic guitar and a singer with a gusty, not-too-overpowering, but quite shadowy voice, and a rhythm section that doesn't mind kicking out grooves amongst strong pop hooks, Admiral Twin captures the best of both worlds. And, only minimal amounts of the bad aspects of each genre (like bad hippie vibes and over-wrought, mediocre pop hooks that fall flat).

Here is a strong album that will bring hippies over to the pop world (whereas in the past some have been fond of mocking pop). And pop fans over into the hippie groove world (we all know how pop fanatics hate the hippies... listen to me now for a prime example). Boil it all down and what do you get? A groove-filled, fun-time pop album that makes you want to dance in the warmth of the night and relax in the sunny, laziness of the day. I'll give it a B-.
