Mother May I
33 1/3 (SAM)

By: Geoff Melton

Released five years after their Columbia Records debut Splitsville, Mother May I is finally back with their latest disc 33 1/3. With an edgy, hook-heavy pop sensibility 33 1/3 finds the band moving through a diverse array of sounds covering the ragged side of The Replacements and Soul Asylum, as well as the rootsy flavor of Wilco and Son Volt along with more straight-ahead pop reminiscent of Matthew Sweet. Although they were unceremoniously dumped by Columbia (the label pulled them off the road while in support of Splitsville) and have had their share of personnel changes, Mother May I has come back with a real winner.
