Shadow
Shadow (Century Media)

By: Jeb Branin

Absolutely essential! SHADOW are definitely one of Century Media's top additions of late. Hailing from Japan this band has enough brutish death metal force to crush your soul yet enough melodic overtones to give their music the versatility and depth it needs to reach a wider audience. So many bands who try and infuse rich melodies into death metal forget that the final result still needs to have enough kinetic energy to cause friction burns in the eardrums of any who dare listen - SHADOW does not make that mistake. Indeed with the ultra-sick vocal delivery of Tokiko Shimamoto this CD is going to be popular listening even amongst those diehard death metal minions who usually don't appreciate a smoother approach. The fact Tokiko is female will only make it that much remarkable. Hell, I had listened to this CD twice before I even noticed that she was a she - one can only wish that even half the male death growlers sounded this disfigured. A winner any way you look at it.
