DVD REVIEW
Hannibal Special Edition [Rated R] (MGM)

By: Randy Harward

Hannibal loses points for being too slick, almost artsy-fartsy and for its utter lack of "quid pro quo" between Clarice Starling (whom Julianne Moore portrays well enough you forget to compare her Clarice to Jodie Foster's) and Dr. Hannibal Lecter. Not only that, but the thrills are contrived and too far spaced. The two-disc Special Edition contains 35 minutes of deleted scenes, some of which might have better served the film had they been left in, commentary from director Ridley Scott, an alternate ending, five making-of featurettes, a multi-angle featurette on the art of storyboarding, a five-angle breakdown of the fish market action scene, yet another multi-angle featurette on the opening titles and a gallery of stills, posters and TV spots. Might be worth a rental, but only hardcore fans should purchase.
