Radio 4
Gotham! (Gern Blandsten)

By: Cam Lindsay

Radio 4 continue the exciting trend of punk influenced rock coming out of NYC right now. And yes, they do sound like some classic bands. They have the energy of The Clash along with some Joe Strummer vocals, the late 70s/early 80's cutting edge experimentation of Magazine and that Gang Of Four artistic sensibility. Gotham!, their second album, is a blast of commotion, filtered through the sounds of electronic punk rock, similar to say Primal Scream, with less of a groove. However, Radio 4 like to mix things up. "Struggle" has some simple guitar riffs, but is surrounded by these huge, tribal drum sounds. As you delve deeper into the record, which includes the wildly hyper "Certain Tragedy", the band show their more surprising influences. "Pipe Bombs" is smothered in dub, something not unfamiliar to bands like The Clash, which helps take this punk rock record and make it even more out there, which is a very good thing.
