Raising The Fawn
Raising The Fawn (Jade Tree)

By: Cam Lindsay

Toronto's Raising The Fawn are a collective led by the talents of multi-instrumentalist John Crossingham. The self-titled debut album is a melodic journey into the heart of Crossingham, who wrote the album about his girlfriend. Throughout the eleven tracks, Crossingham uses a romantic falsetto to tell his tales of love. His vocals are accompanied by some truly interesting instrumentation, like on "Cableknit Clouds" which begins beautifully, only to turn into what sounds like a digital train wreck. There is also a certain natural aesthetic to the album. The guitars sound virginal and most tracks seem to deal with nature, either through the song titles or sounding at times like it was recorded outdoors. A graceful album that takes your breath away in the most harmless and gentle ways.
