Dear Nora
The New Year E.P. (Magic Marker Records)

By: Alex Steininger

The New Year E.P. is a bit misleading. Sure, it's only twenty-three minutes. But, there are eleven tracks. Granted, there are some instrumental interludes here, but it could be considered an LP had the label and/or band decided they wanted to sell it as an LP and collect a few more dollars per record.

They didn't, and that kind of caring, caring about the listener and the consumer, comes through in the songs. Their honest, real, and simplistic nature are what make the songs, as Dear Nora (aka Katy Davidson) offers up lo-fi eight track recordings of pure pop singer-songwriter nuggets, tender, reflective, and sweet ditties that seem fragile and ready to fall apart at any minute. Somehow, though, through the use of melody and pop hooks, they stay together, getting you to sing along as you absorb the music and put yourself in Davidson's mind.

Solid songwriting, integrity in tact, and an ear for pop, Dear Nora's The New Year E.P. is a offering of lo-fi pop goodness one just can't help really get into. I'll give it a B+.
