The High Fidelity
Demonstration (Freedom In Exile)

By: Cam Lindsay

The Soup Dragons were a band that had some minor success in the early 90s with tracks like "I'm Free", "Divine Thing" and "Pleasure". They crashed and burned and are now in the "What ever happened to?" bin. However, out from the ashes of the Soup Dragons rises The High Fidelity, the next band of Sean Dickson's. On their North American debut album (their UK debut came out 2 years ago), Demonstration, The High Fidelity gather up all of their influences and let them loose throughout the twelve songs. Everything from electronic hoochy-koo ("Luv Dup") and gospel tenderness ("Ithanku") to channel-surfing punk ("Addicted to a TV") and spaced out ballads ("Odyssey of a Psychonaut"). Dickson has definitely covered all of the bases in his big return and it works for him. Demonstration has enough appeal and diversity to keep the listener interested without making them uncomfortable with all of the different styles. It's a well-crafted pop record with plenty of shining moments. B
