Back to Stax/Memphis Soul (MVD)
By: Randy Harward

In theory, you can't go wrong with a concert tributizing one of the sweetest sounds ever played, especially when those paying tribute are some of the innovators. However, this 1990 concert, featuring Booker T. and the MGs, Eddie Floyd, Sam Moore, Phil Upchurch, the Memphis Horns and Carla Thomas, looks and sounds like a tired, early 80s episode of Solid Gold. It's obvious everyone loves the music, but the crowd...comprised of oldsters, natch...and the musicians (including a mulleted Steve Cropper and Donald "Duck" Dunn in one of his more unfortunate aesthetic periods), can't help but appear weary (although Moore does his best to pump everybody up). Even if Stax soul is your heaven, this 154-minute show is a chore to sit through. A for the music, B- for the DVD.
