Ash
Envy (Infectious)

By: Cam Lindsay

A nice taster from the band's 10th anniversary singles compilation, Intergalactic Sonic 7"s, "Envy" is another fabulous slice of guitar-heavy pop. The most notable element to this new song is the use of Charlotte Hatherly on back-up vocals. The mix of female vocals with Tim Wheeler's sounds perfect. This can also be said for the fantastic b-side to CD2, "Tonight You Belong To Me", the simplest Ash song to date. Tim and Charlotte (I am guessing), an acoustic guitar and a well-placed trumpet show a more modest side to their normal plugged-in approach. This soft side can also be heard on "I Shall Not Die", an old Irish folk song, adapted by Wheeler. Featuring Erlend _ye from Kings of Convenience and a string section, the song is a beautiful interpretation, again, showing more of what this band is capable of. CD1's b-sides are a filled with a lot more punk-fuelled adrenaline. They cover the Buzzcocks' classic "I Don't Mind" with enough of their own character to make it sound like one of their own. "Bad Karma Blues" is the band at their most troublesome, unleashing the energy they're known for and letting it all loose. It's the band having fun, which is always a blast of sonic power. The band never seems to disappoint with the extra tracks on their singles, and this is a perfect case of that. A
