The Coral
The Coral (Deltasonic)

By: Cam Lindsay

Scouser always hit you when you least expect it. The Beatles did it in the 60s, Echo & The Bunnymen and The Teardrop Explodes did it in the 80s, and now, there's The Coral. From out of nowhere really, they have become the best UK act to make it big in the charts this year. It's quite shocking to learn that they're all barely in their 20s (some are teens) because from the sounds of their debut album, the influences these young men have used to make their music is phenomenal. Their debut single, "Shadows Fall", is part ska, part dub, and part Ukrainian trad-folk. Seriously, you can't figure them out, because right after follows, "Dreaming Of You", the best modern throwback to 60s RnB made since the 60s, and an absolute contender for single of the year. "Goodbye" is in a similar vein, but dressed more in MOD attire. The Coral really does seem too fresh and strange to believe upon first hearing it. "Skeleton Key" is the finest example of this. More deranged than anything on the record, it brings Zappa at his weirdest to mind, which is an absolute corker, considering it was their second single. Rarely has a band come along that is this interesting, good and popular with the people. However to believe it, you really have to hear it. A+
