Nicolai Dunger
Tranquil Isolation (Overcoat Recordings)

By: Alex Steininger

Nicolai Dunger's Tranquil Isolation, including support from Peter Townsend, Jessica Billey, and Paul and Will Oldham, gracefully turns from roots-y notes through sheer pop. Dunger prefers the sparse to the crammed, and the spacious to the tight, as he writes easily accessible, intimate songs that gently flow one into another. The silky smooth-ness of them carrying you from one to the other, as you hang on the edge of your seat and absorb every late note, not wanting to miss anything. This is tender pop-folk at its best, the feeling of sitting there playing a guitar while you think nobody else is listening ever present in every song. I'll give it an A-.
