The Out Crowd
Go On, Give A Damn (Elephant Stone Records)

By: Alex Steininger

Fronted by Matt Hollywood, one of the founding members of The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Portland's The Out Crowd quickly established themselves as a hipster band catering to 60s revivalists with their bouncy, boppin' guitar-pop by way of Britain sound. The hooks are shiny, the melodies undeniable, and the rhythm section makes you want to shake your ass and have a good time. Unfortunately, some of the band's hooks are written outside the vocal range of Mr. Hollywood, leaving things high and dry when Hollywood tries to match the energy of the music he and the band craft. Still, if you like lo-fi Brit-pop with a danceable rhythm, The Out Crowd seems to point in the right direction. I'll give it a B-.
