The Cansecos
The Cansecos (Upper Class/a>)

By:
Cam Lindsay

Following in the footsteps of their fellow thriftshop pop co-hort, The Russian Futurists, Toronto's The Cansecos have constructed their own brand of shoestring indie pop. Comprised of Gareth Jnes and Bill Halliday, the duo use charity shop synthesizers and expired PCs to make their masterpiece audio theatre. Their eponymous debut album (which took two years to make) is a lo-fi collection of imaginative beats that guide a strong taste in pop melody while keeping it all quite complex and experimental. In a similar vein to the challenging 69 Love Songs trilogy of Stephin Merrit's Magnetic Fields, this record does not stay put. The tempo constantly shifts, and the fat, hip-hop beats sound like a different producer is at the helm for each track. The Cansecos are true visionaries when it comes to creating a musical realm of endless possibilities. Their debut album is an innovative tool and a fine example of what can be done with a meager budget and a million ideas to work with.
