Gigolo Aunts
Pacific Ocean Blues (Q Division)

By: Alex Steininger

The Gigolo Aunts' Pacific Ocean Blues is a steady, safe power-pop record. Instead of fully realizing the songs, however, they go for rough edges over pristine production, sounding like the harmony-rich pop band that couldn't get a good producer behind them (regardless if this is true or not), thus making their songs sound lacking and empty.

They write pop songs that could blossom and flourish under better circumstances, but seem to enjoy subduing them with their rock 'n' roll appetite, a hunger that eventually kills the album. Lush harmonies crashing against jangle-y, buzzing guitars, and a thundering rhythm section, this is power-pop that tried to be somewhat garage rock and didn't make the grade. Having said that, there are still a few diamond-in-the-rough moments, especially choruses, throughout. I'll give it a C.
