The Piranhas
Erotic Grit Movies (In The Red)

By: Cam Lindsay

Welcome to The Piranhas' funhouse of punk madness. Using one mean organ to lead the way for their psychotic, amphetamine-fuelled garage rock, Detroit's The Piranhas sound like sadistic killers running amok with music as their weapon. Erotic Grit Movies isn't a record to place next to The White Stripes, The Sights or The Detroit Cobras because it would rip them to shreds. They borrow that blood, sweat and more blood philosophy from the hometown heroes, The Stooges, creating raw, metallic, mental punk rock. Singer Gentle Jamie is anything but. His howl is that of a madman, easily putting any other screaming frontman's voice to shame. What remains to be the most important element throughout is the playful organ of Ami. Without it, they might not have the same powerful effect, but because of it, they sound like the best thing outta Detroit since Meg White.
