Liars
Fins To Make Us More Fish-like (Mute)

By: Cam Lindsay

Currently riding the NYC/Punk funk wave of hype, Liars have quickly followed up their debut album, They Threw Us All In A Trench And Stuck A Monument On Top, for Mute with an equally impressive EP. Fins To Make Us More Fish-like sees the band continue their ode to The Contortions by whipping up three spastic tunes. Lead tracks "Pillars Were Hollow and Filled With Candy So We Tore Them Down" and "Everyday Is A Child With Teeth" are both new tracks. The former kicks up a stomping drum beat, accented by some great sonic explorations with the guitar and a siren of some sort. The latter is even more true to the No Wave sound, refusing any sort of structure for free-form, out of control noise. The third and final track, is a re-recording of the album's opening track "Grown Men Don't Fall In A River, Just Like That". This new version isn't radically different, and even better really, but the changes are noticeable and worth hearing. B+
