Boris
Amplifier Worship (Southern Lord)

By: Jeb Branin

Yet again Southern Lord taps into the back catalogue of Japan's reigning masters of sludge-noise and unearths a gem. I, of course, refer to BORIS. Although similar in overall flavor to the "Absolutego" album (the Southern Lord predecessor to "Amplifier Worship"), this one has more diverse flavoring while being no less bombastic (in the good sense of the word) and crushing. There are even a few moments that the band actually kicks out the jams and let's all hell break loose in a Detroit-inspired tribute to noise-punk ("Hama" and "Kuruimizu"). MC5 and THE STOOGES would be proud, assuming they could accept their influence being interpreted by a band who has the admirable ability to overpower a cement truck full of scrap iron. Another winner for the future hearing impaired fans of all things sludgy, like me!
