The Detroit Cobras Seven Easy Pieces (Rough Trade) By: Cam Lindsay
Choosing a very unoriginal method of making music, The Detroit Cobras embrace other people's music to make their own. Only doing classics, this soulful five-piece pull off sounding both vintage and very now both at the same time. Their records on Sympathy For The Record Industry were great throwbacks to the yesteryears, combining a keen sense of 60s pop with a strong taste for garage rock.Their first release for the legendary Rough Trade Records sees Rachel Nagy and company again pull off someone else's music and make it even better as their own. Seven Easy Pieces may contain seven covers, but to the untrained and uneducated ear, these songs are rightfully Cobras tunes. Tracks like "My Baby Loves The Secret Agent" and "99 and a Half Just Won't Do" suck out the soul of the originals, leaving it for the Cobras to ingest. Though seven songs is slightly disappointing since it's been two years since their last record, this is a good taster of what's to come for the next full-length. And since original compositions are expected this time around, the excitement will be much harder to contain. B
