Just an American Band (Beer City Records)

By: Jeb Branin

Do you want the good news first, or the bad news first? You're a punk so you probably want the bad news first - I'm a punk so I'll ignore you and give you what you don't want first. The good news is that "Just an American Band" by VERBAL ABUSE has aged really well. This seminal 80s hardcore/crossover album sounds as good now as it did then. The bad news? It never sounded that great, even then. For my money VERBAL ABUSE was along the line of bands like BROKEN BONES, VICIOUS CIRCLE, CANCEROUS GROWTH, FINAL CONFLICT, ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT and countless others? good, definitely listenable, but not essential. Certainly not memorable. The best part of this re-release is there is a well-recorded live set so it is like getting two albums for the price of one. 80s crossover seems to be going through a resurgence of sorts and certainly anybody who was into that scene, or wants to discover that scene, needs to be aware of VERBAL ABUSE, but that isn't the same thing as having to be INTO them.
