EP (Western Tread)

 The first release on Western Tread, the new label from Jim Adkins, frontman for the rock group Jimmy Eat World, and friend and manager Charlie Levy, is the debut EP from Arizona's The Format. Planning to release a full-length on Elektra in the fall, the EP serves as an introduction for the band before they hit the big time. And, with friends like Jimmy Eat World (who have exploded in the past year) and solid songs, selling some records shouldn't be far out of The Format's reach.EP is a five-song collection of slightly emo, melodic pop-rock. Instead of screaming at you or trying to force feed you loud guitar riffs and pulsating rhythms, decides to sit back and write oft tender, poignant songs that would rather sit back and spill out their heart than try and hide behind noise. The exception, the closing track, "Even Better Yet", which more than proves the band can also rock. Stand outs like the piano ballad "At The Wake" and the acoustic bounce of "One Shot, Two Shots" will instantly make you a Format fan - and get you singing along, too. I'll give this a B+.
