Brat We Are The Rockingest (Kill Deer Records) By: Alex Steininger
The smart-to-silly/silly-to-smart pop of Brat, a Madison duo comprised of Noahjohn's Eena Ballard and local legend Freddy La Force, is a handful. The record is quirky and hard to swallow, a galloping, fun-time record written on the porch over a summer. It lends itself to this, too, sounding like two people, having fun, on a porch over an entire summer, drinking wine, and crafting songs that are at first silly, but on closer inspection have something going. Incorporating (in the loosest of senses) post-punk, new wave, indie rock, and shoe gazer, Brat's We Are The Rockingest is the kind of record you can't, but should take at face value. And then bask in every moment of it while scratching your head trying to figure out exactly what was said, and what is going on. I'll give it a B-.
