Entrance
The Kingdom of Heaven Must Be Taken by Storm (Tiger Style Records)

By: Alex Steininger

Twenty-one year old Guy Blakeslee (aka Entrance) re-creates pre-war blues, bringing a contemporary sheen to the sound as he updates it with his own touch. The passion and conviction don't always get nailed on the album, though live Blakeslee exudes his love for the blues to the extreme, putting on a show that humbles the recordings found here. But, to judge The Kingdom of Heaven Must Be Taken by Storm on its own merits, including covers of Skip James' "I'm So Glad" and Bob Dylan's "Tommy Thumb's Summertime Blues", the record holds up. Blakeslee has the knowledge, he's obviously done his research and grown up on the raw blues sound he recreates on this album. And he has the talent to pull it off, an area where others who had the knowledge failed at. And at such a young age, Blakeslee seems to be a rising star. Sometimes a diamond in the rough, when he nails it, he can't be beat, and when he doesn't quite nail it, he makes such a valiant effort, you can't shame him for it. I'll give this a B-.
