The Red Hot Valentines Calling Off Today (Polyvinyl Records) By: Alex Steininger
![](/images/sep.gif)
The Red Hot Valentines' Polyvinyl debut, the three-song Calling Off Today EP means well, but just doesn't make the grade. A mixture of faux new wave and stale pop-rock, they come off sounding like the MTV buzz band of the moment, with more frills than substance, all wrapped in a pretty face. They've got some good hooks, and make you want to sing along - against your will - but after you fill up on the empty calories you start craving something more. I'll give it a C-.
