The September Sessions Soundtrack (The Moonshine Conspiracy Records)

By: Mark A. Lawrence the IV

I find it fitting that Jack Johnson adapted Jimmy Buffet's "Pirate Looks at 40" to open up this album. In a way taking the mantel of the Beach combing troubadour, with his mellow voice and apparent skills with the guitar. This collection cycles through musical styles with almost every song. From the jazzy-hip-hop instrumental of Greyboy's "Grey's Groove," to the soulful strut of the always funky G. Love & Special Sauce with the fat bass of their "Willow Tree," this album has everything. Rap shows its head with Ozomatli's Super Bowl Sundae" that sports some righteous horns. This awesomely eclectic assortment with an overall mellow feel to it, is no doubt amassed by a surfer. The September Sessions band offers up two bitchin' numbers but the most powerful sans lyrics tune comes in the way of Beat Down Sound's "Piglet's Lament" with an outstanding mix of elements that creates a high tide of sound that washes over you. This is a great album worth picking up. Rating: B+
