Hypatia Lake
Your Universe, Your Mind (Sad Robot Records)

By: Alex Steininger

Intertwined with spoken word bits throughout the record, Seattle's Hypatia Lake's latest, Your Universe, Your Mind, is the kind of record you close your eyes and daydream too. And while your eyes are closed, you begin to doze off, images forming in your head, unconsciously, that follow the songs. Taking you back to your childhood, the melancholic pop of Hypatia Lake recalls your best and worst memories, bringing it all to the surface as the dark, gloomy textures of the record clash with the more optimistic overtones and pop spirit buried behind the songs. Frightening in silence and joyful in noise, the relaxed, minimalist songs make you think, there is no way around it, as you sink into their brooding songs. I'll give it a B+.
