David Alan Grier
The Book of David: The Cult Figure's Manifesto (Comedy Central)

By: Alex Steininger

As is common with most Comedy Central DVDs, David Alan Grier's first ever stand-up comedy DVD, The Book of David: The Cult Figure's Manifesto includes un-aired footage not seen on the original broadcast, as well as D.A.G.'s appearance on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

Now, I've been a big fan of Grier's for a long time. His work on Crank Yankers, one of my favorite songs right now (and a Comedy Central original, to boot), is unbeatable. And, his history on In Living Colour, FOX's racy skit comedy show from the early 90s, is unquestionable.

So, what do we get here on The Book of David: The Cult Figure's Manifesto?

Grier's witty, approachable jokes on growing up, his hometown of Detroit, and visiting relatives on Thanksgiving (something we all did last month, no doubt).

And, though there are some sluggish moments here, the majority of this seventy-minute DVD is laugh-out-loud comedy at its best. Grier once again proves to be a shining star, and one of Comedy Central's biggest talents. I'll give this a B+.
