The Darkness
Permission To Land (Atlantic Records)

By: Alex Steininger

Spandex-clad and proud of it, metalheads The Darkness bring back the unmentionable with tongue-in-cheek humor and a biting serious that will blind even the wariest of critics. With their debut full-length, Permission To Land, The Darkness combine a love of all things hair bands, as well as 70s arena rock like Van Halen, coping both the sound and live show antics from the bands whose alter they worship at. The result is a record that will take you by storm. Put on at first for the humor aspect of it, the sharp melodies and gushing hooks come out of nowhere, knocking you on your ass and claiming you as a victim. With a huge smile on your face and tight jeans rendering your senses useless, you fall in love with this band - and you can't help it. They're just so damn nostalgic and fun, but so modern and years ahead of their time, you can't help but know you're on to something good here. I'll give it an A-.
