Do You Imagine Things? (Regal)

 Jumping ship from Badly Drawn Boy's Twisted Nerve Records to the more psychedelic folk friendly Regal Recordings, Manchester's Alfie have built on their friendly, indie folk machine by adding other layers to their portfolio. Do You Imagine Things?, their second album proper, sees Alfie tapping into Zeppelin riffs, chewy krautrock/psychedelia and more of that expected tweefulness. "People" soars to a snappy motorik beat that's pure Neu! without the noodling. "Stuntman" uses a tricky familiar opening to then crash into a shocking Jimmy Page riff, eventually becoming akin to one of The Charlatans' rock tunes. "No Need" explores even more boundaries, starting off with some melange of hip-hop, avant-screaming-madness, only to slip into something more comfortable. "Isobel" attempts balladry, yet the soft horns and thinly plucked guitar underneath Lee Gorton's painfully tender vocals miss the mark and provide the album's only true achille's heel. "Hey Mole" ends off the album with a grand sing-along of the group. Do You Imagine Things? finds Alfie more complete and refined.
