Gallowbird's Bark (Rough Trade)

 The fact that two-pieces are sweeping the floor with retro-garage-blooze rock is a remarkable thing. What is it about these duos that make the blues so much more dirty, exhilarating and damn cool? The White Stripes, The Black Keys and The Kills have all made their marks, so now it's time for another girl-boy team (yes, I realize The Black Keys are both guys) to join the fold. Originally from Chicago, but now based in Brooklyn, Eleanor and Matt Friedberger share the same blood (yes, that's a new one) along with a quirkier rendition of indie blues. Using compelling lo-fi production measures to give character to their diverse taste in sound, The Fiery Furnaces' have accomplished one wildly creative debut. Gallowbird's Bark contains a wonderful array of whimsical lyrics sung by the wonderfully androgynous voice of Eleanor. Her rich wordplay comes to life with the madly inventive instrumentation of Matt, that includes bouncy pianos and swampy guitar riffs. For those who found Royal Trux to be a very interesting bunch but too brash and difficult to swallow, here is your band.
