Low Flying Owls Elixir Vitae (Stinky Records) By: Scott D. Lewis
Hailing from California and with their third release, Low Flying Owls prove they can grind out that type of swaggering and snotty, garage-y rock the Strokes think they are so good at. Just listen to opener "Glad to be Alive" or "What My Friends Say." But, unlike the incredible disappearing band from the opposite coast, this one is savvy enough to mix up the mix to keep things interesting all the way through. There's more than a smidgen of Iggy Pop in Jared Southard's darkly menacing slurs, but he yields his tool with greater control and finesse, running it through a trunk of effects and always working closely alongside the acid-rock influence tact of his bandmates. "Looks of a Killer" takes an obvious AC/DC power chord and threads it through alternate passages of careening chaos and dreamy pop while the following "Strange Connection" sounds like Love and Rockets dosed with pharmaceutical-grade opium. The intersection between My Bloody Valentine and Pink Floyd can be found in the instrumental "Babies Made." "Georgie Shot Johnnie" has a decidedly George Harrison/Beatles feel to it with floating piano parts, guitar swells and an effect on the vocals that cause them to swirl out of the speakers. Flying high and doing it well, these Owls are tasty critters.
