Rufus Wainwright Want One (Dreamworks Records) By: Alex Steininger
Singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright's third solo record, Want One, combines rock opera with orchestral pop, resulting in a lush, full sounding record that carries itself with miraculous grace. Whether he's goofing off (the vocal-driven, opera-induced, sparse "Vibrate"). Writing glorious, brilliantly bright pop ("Vicious World"), theatrical melodies ("Oh, What A World"), or sparse-to-monumental numbers ("Go Or Go Ahead"). He never loses sight of his structure of form, delivering warming, blissful, and enchanting numbers that are equal parts exotic and domestic, reeling from one part to the next like a good book or a play, captivating all that hear. Wainwright seems on top of his game and, if Want One is any indication, the third time is a charm. I'll give it a B+.
