Stars of Track and Field
Stars of Track and Field (No Logo Records)

By: Alex Steininger

Portland, Oregon outfit Stars of Track and Field go beyond the limitations of indie-rock to explore more vibrant, fleshed out pop conceptions on their self-titled debut, a warm, laid-back collection of eight songs (lasting thirty minutes). Subtle and slow moving, they never try to force anything down your throat. Hooks are not their thing either. Nor do they parade around with overly saturated melodies whose purpose is to force-feed you. Instead, they are content playing in the background, delivering raindrop-esque compositions that are just there, never ruffling feathers, never overstating their presence, but just there. And it is in this timid-ness that the band finds their beauty, hitting the mark with quiet, quaint, but still rocking numbers that move like molasses but taste just as sweet. And though, at times, you do wish they'd step up from behind the curtain and let you know that they're here, you can't blame a band for preferring to avoid the spotlight and just focus on the music. I'll give it a C+.
