Various Artists Beautiful - A Tribute to Gordon Lightfoot (Borealis Records / Northern Blues Records) By: Mark A. Lawrence the IV
Opening with the Cowboy Junkies on "The Way I Feel," producing a sound I haven't heard since their Lay Me Down album, this Gordon Lightfoot tribute album gets off to a great start. The child of Borealis and Northern Blues records, this collection of artist presents the great musical fruits of the north, paying honor to one of their greatest. Prior to this album I didn't have much knowledge of Lightfoot's work but I was familiar with many of the artists on this CD including Maria Muldaur, The Tragically Hip, and Blackie and the Rodeo Kings. Though if the songs they covered are any representation of Lightfoot's work I'm sure to like his catalog too. This CD is a prime example of why tribute albums are quickly replacing soundtracks as my favorite source of discovering new music, because your introduced to the artists making the tribute album and you many times get a wider view of the honored artist. Some wonderful tracks on this album include Blackie and The Rodeo Kings' "Summer Side Of Life," Connie Kaldor's "If You Could Read My Mind," and the slide guitar and unique percussion of Harry Manx's "Bend In The River." This tribute is a wonderful collection and a great way to introduce your self to some new artists and the work of Gordon Lightfoot. Rating: B
