Dollar Store Cowboys
And The Horse They Rode In On. . . (Infect Records)

By: Mark A. Lawrence the IV

The Dollar Store Cowboys' style mixes a hyperactive rockabilly with a cow punk sound reminiscent of the Lazy Cowgirls. The DSCs even pull off a darker edge on "Hellbent," displaying traits of Big John Bates. I have to admit that from the sound of these guys I thought they were from Texas; not the Texas that spit out the Bush Klan but the hard living, open highway Texas. 12 Pack Trevor on drums, punctuates these songs like machinegun fire and sets a landscape for Grant Panic's speedy guitar and Jason Danger's rough but clear vocals. From the more country ting of "Off The Wagon" to the crazy "Chicken Stomp," this is fine music for drinkin', truckin', and meetin' loose women. "Bowling Ally Blitz," gives Stu Vegas the chance to showcase his bass work, which he weaves through these songs giving them a little extra protein. Over all, I thought this was a good CD, though I wasn't really wowed by their cover of "Folsom Prison Blues." It just lacked the feel that they had taken the time to really make the song their own.
