Country and City (Pop Sweatshop)

By: Jeb Branin

MAGSTATIC are one of my favorite bands and it takes me months to get around to reviewing their new CD; gotta plead insanity on this one. Regardless of my idiocy, "Country and City" is a proud moment in the MAGSTATIC opus. In many ways it is a benchmark of their work to this point. Somehow that seems appropriate on an album that sees a complete re-tooling of the line-up, "Country and City" combines the hook-rich pop of the "Kung-Fu" EP, the intelligent emo of the "Cruiseliner" album, and the revved up punk of the "Wrist Rockets and Roller Coasters" disc. The seamless merger of all those elements, plus the seemingly never ending talent escalation displayed by frontman Terrence D.H., makes this the most complete effort yet from MAGSTATIC. I would say "definitive work" except that I've learned (from almost two decades of rabid fandom) that the best D.H. album is always the next one. How he continues to top himself year after year is a mystery for the ages. Seriously! This isn't hype. This is rock n' damn roll.
