The Carolines
Youth Electronics (Self-released)

By: Alex Steininger

More polished than indie rock, but not overcooked like a modern rock or adult alternative act, Portland, Oregon's The Carolines prove that a band can stay true to its craft and make accessible songs, all without losing the passion. Youth Electronics is a fresh-faced, youthful exercise in pretty melodies accented by backing vocal harmonies, slightly rocking songs toned down with charming hooks, and mid-tempo pieces more concerned with craft than cool. Their sound will never be the in sound in indie rock, and isn't hooky enough to find themselves on the radio, but it is a clean-cut sound worthy of an audience, one that leaves enough of a mark to find said audience in anybody that gives the album a chance. I'll give it a B-.
