Mercury Boy
Get It Goin' (Jafzi Records)

By: Mark A. Lawrence the IV

This CD isn't exactly what I thought it was going to be when I threw it in my CD player and slipped on the headphones. Imagine a voice less annoying, yet oddly reminiscent of Weird Al Yankovic singing Adam Sandler like songs that reach for the musical integrity of Tenacious D and the unpredictable rock of the Violent Femmes. Admittedly not a candidate for the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame, at least not yet. There are truly enjoyable elements to the tunes on Mercury Boy's 4 song CD Get It Goin'. With "Bus Driver" and "It's All Trash," both songs have firm rock foundations with assertive guitar, solid timing on drums and a supportive bass line that can sit just under the body of the song or fill the foreground just as effectively. These impressive instrumental arrangements could hold their own against other bands that have more notoriety and clout, and buff out some of the flaws still edged into the lyrics. There is still growth to be done with fitting all the lyrics together, but for the most part the song writing is sound. Though not for everyone, Mercury Boy is definitely worth a listen to see if you like his stuff. I look forward to seeing what he can do with a whole album. Rating: C
