Automatic Black
De-Evolution (Arista Records)

By: Mike SOS

Automatic Black is a Philadelphia-based quartet who really sound like a cross between NYC's D-Generation and Los Angeles' Social Distortion on a good portion of its 11-track debut. It's this raw, unabashed attitude that make the snarling "Radio Edit" and the straight-ahead gate crashing of "Antiseptic" fist-pumping anthems for either coast. However, Automatic Black's debut has a lot of fluff, too, which dilutes the band's overall emphasis, as songs like the overwrought "Crash and Burn" fit smack dab in the middle of a new Matchbox Twenty release and a ONE TREE HILL make out scene. Unbalanced but not without style or soul, Automatic Black DE-EVOLUTION meanders between vapid teenage wastelands and sweaty underground rock clubdom and may be worth a listen with a few skips of the old CD player.
