Uncle Kracker
72 and Sunny (Lava Records)

By: Jeb

For those who know me as "the guy who reviews all the metal and hardcore stuff" it might surprise you to know that the new UNCLE KRACKER album 72 and Sunny is one of my current favorites. For those who have seen my record collection, it won't come as much of a surprise. I've always had a weak spot (maybe in my head?) for back-porch blues inspired rock n' boogie. And that is exactly what UNCLE KRAKER is. Southern boogie influenced blues rock with lots of pop hooks intermingled with just enough steel guitar to appeal to country and western fans without taking the plunge into Nashville hell. Imagine if you will, Rickie Medlocke of BLACKFOOT playing MARSHALL TUCKER covers while trying to sound like JOHNNY LEE HOOKER playing pop. Pretty damn cool, eh? If the BLACK CROWES had more grit under their fingernails and sounded more like the ROSSINGTON COLLINS BAND and less like FREE, you might also have a touchstone. But I hate to make all the comparisons by looking into the past, because there are bands from Motown to Jacksonville to Salt Lake City to Austin who are playing music like this for nothing more than the love of the blues, southern boogie and beer. To top it all off, UNCLE KRACKER is a romantic and isn't afraid to let it show in the music. Yes, that means lots of ballads. You got a problem with that? I don't review a lot of music that the word "beautiful" is an apt description, but this case is the obvious exception.
