Mushroomhead XIII (Universal) By: Mike SOS
Slipknot plus Faith No More equals? Mushroomhead, boys and girls, as the costumed crusaders of crushing metal return with its sophomore effort, XIII. So, the real question remains: is this Cleveland clan merely a bunch of unoriginal rip-off artists or acclaimed metallers? Judging by the eclectic 13-track offering provided by this juggernaut, it seems like it's the latter. Spanning from the spookiness of Marilyn Manson on "Sun Doesn't Rise" to the ethereal musings of Faith No More in its prime on "Mother Machine Gun" to the Gothic overtones of Lacuna Coil on "One More Day", Mushroomhead finally put to rest the myths and conjecture and deliver a stunning display of majestic hard rock whose melodies are heavenly and whose bite is potent. Some may still cry copycat, but those with an open mind and the sense to know that everything comes from somewhere will be pleased.
