The Rum Diary
Poisons That Save Lives (Substandard Records)

By: Alex Steininger

Ethereal, late-night, guitar-based indie-rock with an alluring, melodic side, The Rum Diary's Poisons That Save Lives is a slow moving, reel-you-in record that deploys subtly and intrigue to keep you on the edge of your seat. Meanwhile, the sweet, sugar-laced vocals, oozing with sensitivity, appeal to your senses as you sit there, starring out the window, daydreaming, allowing Poisons That Save Lives to be the soundtrack to your wandering thoughts for the evening. It has its downside, such as it gets caught up in its own absent-minded journey, but that is quickly erased when the band brings you back in with jarring rhythms or slicing guitars. I'll give it a B.
